With lockdown in effect in the UK, work from home life has become the new way of working for most marketers and agencies; including us!

In our previous blog post, we shared our top tips on how to make the most out of working from home as a marketer. 

But this week, we’ve decided to make things a tad bit sweeter! 

As most of us are trying something new with our new work pattern, we thought our team could be challenged by attempting another skill…

…and what better skill than one which involves eating copious amounts of icing while we isolate?

Introducing the Buzzword Bake-Off! 

Featuring 6 delicious cakes, from 7 of our lovely team members. 

Will there be a winner? Keep reading to find out…

NHS Appreciation Cake

Baked by Tom, our New Business Manager, and cake baking partner, Amy

Cake Type: Red velvet cake with turquoise buttercream icing.

Inspiration: NHS workers.

Challenges: Working alongside baking partner, Amy.

Appearance: 10/10 (rating based on opinions of actual NHS workers).

Taste: 9/10

Fun fact: While making this cake an icing fight commenced… but Tom sadly did not win.

Baked by Alana, our Digital Marketing Specialist

Cake Type: Vegan chocolate swirl cupcakes with vanilla buttercream icing, and rainbow sprinkles.

Inspiration: This bakeoff challenge and creating something with a rainbow essence for the Chase the Rainbow trend. 

Challenges: First time making a chia-seed ‘egg’ (egg replacer), so it was uncertain if it would be a success… it was!

Appearance: 9/10 

Taste: 15/10- amazing and will bake again!

Fun fact: To make a chia-egg, all you do is mix 1tbsp chia seeds and 3tbsps water, leave for 5 minutes, and voilà, it creates the gelatinous consistency of an egg! It also did not alter the taste of the cupcakes one bit.

Love, Hope and Kindness

Baked by Adam, our Managing Director, Claire, our Social Media Account Manager, and their son.

Cake Type: Carrot cake with icing. 

Inspiration: Love, hope and kindness; represented by the hand and hearts as a tree blooming into life.

Challenges: Getting the cake mix at the right consistency was tricky, as well as decorating with the icing to achieve the heart design. 

Appearance: 10/10

Taste: 8/10

Fun fact: This cake was a lot of fun to make!

Baked by Tom, our Senior Designer

Cake Type: A vegan chocolate, maple and pecan brownie. 

Inspiration: Tom’s love for chocolate- no other recipes were considered for this challenge!

Challenges: Locating all the baking tools in the kitchen was a challenge, as well having a huge mess of cocoa powder everywhere. 

Appearance: 7/10… but it’s what’s on the inside that counts!

Taste: 10/10 (more than one slice was consumed!)

Fun fact: A quote from the baker himself: “Chloe keeps saying we’ve been together for over 11 years and I have only ever baked twice in that time… she may be right. This was number 3, so was a definite treat for her. I’d say quality over quantity…. Although having just baked a perfect cake, it does make me want to bake and eat more cake.”

Baked by Paula, our Office Manager

Cake Type: Good ol Victoria Sponge! (We all love a classic cake)

Inspiration: Escaping everyday life because of isolation. 

Challenges: Preventing the batter being eaten before the cake was baked…

Appearance: 10/10

Taste: 7/10

Fun fact: Paula says she’s going to need at least 2 exercise sessions a day to burn off this cake!

Baked by Siri, our Senior Designer, and her 2 children. 

Cake Type: Chocolate cake, with chocolate icing, and sprinkles… because you can never have too much chocolate!

Inspiration: 4 year old expert baker’s request.

Challenges: Distractions from children, including cracking many eggs, and attempting to eat vast amounts of batter. 

Appearance: 10/10

Taste: 7/10 (4 year old bake expert rates this one a 15/10, and 2 year old icing fanatic rates this a 5/10, as the taste test only included icing). 

Fun fact: Siri is no stranger when it comes to baking. In fact, in her previous organisation she held an office bake-off challenge, which even included a blind taste test!

Our Buzzword Team Bake-Off was a great way for our team to remain positive about staying at home, while also connecting with our colleagues virtually and attempting a new challenge.

Especially since some of us haven’t baked for years… or ever.
